What Triggers Telogen Effluvium?

  • Iron deficiency — one of the most common causes, especially in women
  • COVID-19 — post-viral telogen effluvium has become increasingly common since 2020

Emotional Stressors

  • Any sustained period of high psychological stress

Other Triggers

  • Nutritional deficiencies — not just iron, but also zinc, vitamin D, B12, and protein

Treatment Options

The primary treatment for telogen effluvium is identifying and addressing the underlying trigger. In many cases, once the trigger is resolved, the shedding stops and hair begins to regrow within several months.

Address the Root Cause

  • Nutritional deficiency → supplement appropriately (iron, vitamin D, zinc, B12, protein)
  • Thyroid disorder → optimize thyroid medication
  • Medication-related → work with your doctor to adjust medications if possible
  • Stress-related → stress management, therapy, lifestyle changes
  • Post-pregnancy → hair typically normalizes within 6-12 months without treatment

Support Treatments

Even while addressing the underlying cause, several treatments can support the recovery process:

  • Minoxidil (Rogaine) — can help shorten the telogen phase and promote earlier return to anagen growth. Available over the counter at 2% and 5% concentrations.
  • Iron supplementation — if ferritin is below 40-50 ng/mL (many doctors consider 12-30 ng/mL "normal" but research suggests optimal ferritin for hair growth is higher)
  • Nutritional optimization — a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and vitamins
  • PRP therapy — can stimulate follicles and may accelerate recovery in persistent cases
  • Low-level laser therapy — may help stimulate follicles back into the growth phase

What Doesn't Help

  • Expensive "hair growth" shampoos — topical products can't address the systemic trigger
  • Panic and obsessive monitoring — stress about hair loss can actually make TE worse (creating a vicious cycle)

Chronic Telogen Effluvium

In some cases, TE can become chronic — lasting more than 6 months. This usually indicates an ongoing or unidentified trigger. Chronic TE warrants a more thorough workup and may require working with a dermatologist or endocrinologist to identify the underlying cause.

  • Gentle handling — use a wide-tooth comb, avoid aggressive towel drying
  • Talk about it — whether with a friend, family member, or professional, processing the emotional impact is important
  • Focus on what you can control — nutrition, sleep, stress management, and treatment
